Reddit post says killing was self-defence

- LIZ MONTEIRO

KITCHENER — A person claiming to be Ager Mohsin Hasan, the man who faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Melinda Vasilije, said he stabbed the woman in self-defence in a Reddit post that has since been removed from the site.

In the online statement posted late Monday night, the writer says he was protecting himself when his ex-girlfriend came at him with a knife.

“Out of shock and fear I grab one (knife). I hit her with it, almost blindly. A few times,” the person wrote. “I was confused, shocked and scared. I had no intentions of that happening. When I left I honestly thought she just passed out. Then I looked at the blood, and started freaking out and just ran.”

The writer said he didn’t know the woman was dead until the following day.

Hasan, a 24-year-old Hamilton man, is on the run. Waterloo Regional Police say Hasan, 24, fled to the United States on Friday only hours after Vasilije was found dead.

Vasilije was stabbed multiple times and found inside her apartment at 38 Country Hill Dr. around 3 a.m. Friday morning.

Hasan was last reportedly seen in Erie County, Penn., on Friday morning when a man matching his description was seen switching licence plates in a Walmart parking lot. He hasn’t been seen since.

In a statement, Waterloo Regional Police said Tuesday they are aware of the Reddit post and that the information is being examined by investigators. “Information like this is potential evidence and, as such, needs to be authenticated and verified,” said Insp. Mike Haffner.

Police said they will not comment further on the Reddit post. Evidence on the charge of second-degree murder will be presented in court which will evaluate the information, Haffner said.

In an interview, Hasan’s mother, Sozan Jamil, said she believes the Reddit post was written by her son because of the photos posted along with the text. “No one else has those pictures,” she said.

Jamil said she still hasn’t heard from her son. She said she found the Reddit post online and contacted police to make them aware of it.

In the post, the person says he was in a relationship with Vasilije after being apart.

He said the couple had talked about marriage and children, and that families on both sides had met each other.

The writer said the pair agreed to meet on Friday after texting. The writer said he arrived at the apartment: “We just cuddled, kissed and talked about everything.”

But things turned sour when Vasilije asked the man if he had been with someone else while they were apart. He admitted he had.

“She started freaking out. Wouldn’t say a word and just kept slapping me with tears in her eyes. Slaps turned into hits,” the post read. The writer said he pushed her and she fell, hitting the sink. She told him to leave. “I go up to her to try and give her a hug, almost out no where she grabs a knife by the sink.

“She comes at me in full force, aiming toward my face. I tell her to stop. She doesn’t, I tried grabbing the knife but ended up cutting my hands. After a few cuts I lost it,” the post said.
