Trudeau has it right on marijuana

- RE: Legalizing pot

Marijuana has been a concern of late. I am not a user. I feel that Trudeau government has it right. Prohibition of alcohol was never fully imposed in Canada but it was in the United States. Prior to prohibition being enacted in the United States, bars were dominated by men. During prohibition, speakeasies began to pop up and were more appealing to women. Therefore more alcohol was consumed. Also, it unknowingly fostered criminal organizations that are still here today.

There is no doubt, marijuana is in use. I applaud the Liberal government for making it legal in 2018. The government will receive the funds that are presently going to criminal gangs which then use the money for other criminal activities. Whether legalizing pot will increase user’s consumption is yet to be known and very unlikely seeing that if you want to use pot, you are using it right now. John Vesprini, Stoney Creek
