Blue Jays option Campos to make room for Liriano
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays optioned right-hander Leonel Campos to triple-A Buffalo on Friday to make room on the roster for left-hander Francisco Liriano ahead of his start Friday night against the New York Yankees.
Liriano spent three weeks on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury. He was 2-2 with a 6.35 earned-run average over seven starts before going on the DL.
Campos was recalled Thursday and worked three innings in relief of starter Marco Estrada in a 12-2 loss to the Yankees in the opener of a four-game series at Rogers Centre.
In five appearances for Toronto this season, Campos (0-0) posted a 2.25 ERA with nine strikeouts over eight innings.
Kershaw gets 2,000th career whiff
MILWAUKEE — Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw got his 2,000th career strike- out when he fanned Jonathan Villar on an 0-2 f astball with one out in the second inning against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Coming into Friday night’s game, Kershaw needed four strikeouts to reach 2,000.
The left-hander achieved the milestone in 1,837 2/3 career innings. The Dodgers say he was the third-fastest pitcher in major league history to compile 2,000 strikeouts. Pedro Martinez reached the plateau in 1,715 1/3 innings, and Randy Johnson was next at 1,734 innings.
Red Sox put Rodriguez on DL
BALTIMORE — Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday after reinjuring his knee on a fall from the bullpen mound.
Rodriguez slipped off the mound during the latter stage of his warmup for Thursday night’s start against the Baltimore Orioles. He declared himself OK, but ended up allowing a career-high tying four home runs in Boston’s 7-5 loss.
