A Canadian memory

RE: Canada at 150 section (June 24)

The young Spec carrier on page BA2 of the Canada At 150 section is my brother (now deceased), Douglas Charles Alexander Grant.

Doug delivered The Spec in the west end, which was rapidly expanding at the time, and he greatly grew his route — winning the bike he is proudly standing beside in a subscription drive.

Doug went on to found the high-tech company Grantek Systems Integration Inc.

I believe the lessons he learned in those early years all contributed to shaping the honourable and successful man Doug became. He learned:

Consistency — on time every day, six days a week, 52 weeks a year. Business Sense — carriers not only delivered the papers but collected the payments in those days. Overcoming adversity — I well remember Doug, Dad and me getting The Spec out the day hurricane Hazel struck.

Thanks for the happy trip down memory lane. O Canada! Paul Grant, Hamilton
