Of­fi­cer in­jured while ap­pre­hend­ing man in dis­tress

A 40-year-old man was tasered by Hamil­ton po­lice af­ter re­sist­ing be­ing ap­pre­hended un­der the Men­tal Health Act.

A po­lice of­fi­cer suf­fered mi­nor in­juries dur­ing the in­ci­dent at an apart­ment build­ing on Mo­hawk Road East near Up­per Welling­ton Street around 1 p.m. Wed­nes­day.

Po­lice had been called to the apart­ment build­ing about a per­son in cri­sis but the man re­sisted go­ing with an of­fi­cer. The of­fi­cer called for backup, lead­ing to a sig­nif­i­cant po­lice pres­ence in the area.

The in­jured of­fi­cer was taken to hos­pi­tal for ob­ser­va­tion.

Po­lice are still in­ves­ti­gat­ing whether crim­i­nal charges are war­ranted.
