Leafs to use throwback jerseys

- TORONTO —

The Toronto Maple Leafs will don throwback jerseys for their Dec. 19 game against visiting Carolina to mark the 100th anniversary of their first ever NHL game. The so-called Next Century Game starts at 2 p.m. “The Next Century Game marks the culmination of a year of Maple Leafs centennial anniversary celebrations that paid tribute to the teams, the accomplishments and the memories of the first 100 years of Maple Leafs hockey,” Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said that Dec. 19 will officially be proclaimed Toronto Maple Leafs Day.

The commemorative jersey for the game is based on the Toronto Arenas’ uniform worn in the franchise’s second season.
