RE: Ticat legends honoured

-

There was a time when Hamiltonians relied upon local media to keep them informed and cover important events. Radio listeners tuned into CHML and never changed the dial. The Spec had a comprehensive Local News section and CHCH reported even the most mundane stories of the day.

All that is mostly gone, of course. Local coverage costs money. Is it any surprise that listeners, readership and viewers have abandoned traditional forms of media when that same media fails to deliver? Where were the reporters when the Tiger-Cats honoured our legendary heroes from the 1957 and 1967 Grey Cup Champion teams at Saturday’s tussle? Where was the live coverage? Nary a mention, sad to say. Instead we are encouraged to celebrate a mediocre team, losers really — with marginal players and fickle fans who have all but forgotten the glory days of yesteryear.

Who cares about seminal players like Mosca, Bethea, and Zuger, or hometown heroes like Michaluk, Krouse, and Turek? They’re still kicking and vibrant as ever, many well into their 70s. Their handshakes can still make a grown man cringe. In a world inundated with fake news, fraudulent leaders and falling standards, we need to remember and look up to these real people, genuine living legends — heroes who paved the way to success. Too bad our local media doesn’t feel the same way. Stephen Lechniak, Ancaster
