The first thing you’ll notice when you meet the owners of C&D Jewellery is their friendly demeanour. You could be forgiven for thinking they seem like sisters as much as coowners. After all, Carol Oliverio and Dianne Dukarich have been running C&D Jewellery in tandem for 35 years and have been friends for even longer - 50 years, to be exact.
What started as a small 300 square foot boutique on Main Street in Hamilton in 1982 is now located in Mountain Plaza Mall and has become a fixture in the community. “We will do just about anything to help make a customer happy,” explains Dukarich. “We will spend 20 minutes detangling a necklace someone brings in. This morning, I searched the store to help a customer buy a gift within her ten dollar budget.” It’s that sincerity and authentic desire to help that compels customers to show up with gift cards, bottles of wine, and homemade cookies as tokens of thanks for their tremendous customer service.
Specializing in estate jewellery, C&D Jewellery has a vast selection of unique and high quality pieces that sell at half their value. “We personally check every piece before it goes on the floor,” says Dukarich who emphasizes every piece they sell comes with a guarantee. “You can’t find this kind of value anywhere. We often sell art deco jewellery pieces valued at $10,000 for just $5,000.”
Customers from across Hamilton and beyond bring their jewellery design visions to C&D to be crafted by the on-site goldsmith, Asad Khan. Just recently, a customer from the United States requested a custom ring comprised of 27 pieces.
“She was so over the moon with the finished product, she actually gave one hundred dollars more than the price we charged for the ring,” says Dukarich. “How often does that happen?” More than anything, such gestures are humbling to Oliverio and Dukarich, who are thankful for more than three decades of success that their store has experienced.
When asked their recipe for success, they attribute it to a simple philosophy: treat people as you’d like to be treated. The same mutual respect Oliverio and Dukarich have for one another is extended to every customer they serve. And, with the store busier than ever, clearly the customers are in agreement.
