The story of how our group called Canada’s Kids at Immaculate Conception started

- BY MATTEA GIORDANO, GRADE 5

I am celebrating Canada 150 by being part of a club at Immaculate Conception School, Ancaster, called Canada’s Kids.

In September 2016, the grade 4’s found out that we would not be learning about countries around the world anymore during our weekly Artsaround program because our curriculum had changed. We asked if we could start our own club. We voted on names for our group and even designed our own logo.

In January of 2017 Peter O’Sullivan, MP Tassi’s Legislative Assistant came to visit our school; we were able to ask him many questions. We asked if MP Filomena Tassi would come to our school and visit our group. Mr. O’Sullivan and MP Tassi did come back to our school!!!

During our visit with MP Tassi we were able to ask lots of questions and since by then we had our very own t-shirt, we gave MP Tassi her very own Canada’s Kids t-shirt, artwork and a framed print of the logo of our group. We also asked her if she could deliver some gifts to our Prime Minister on behalf of our group: a Canada’s Kids t-shirt, artwork and a framed copy of our logo.

On the front of our t-shirts is our logo and on the back of our t-shirts it says 2017, Canada 150 years, Immaculate Conception School, Ancaster. Our dream is to get our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to come to visit our school and to inspire lots of people to celebrate Canada 150!

We also wrote a letter to the only candy cane factory in Canada, which is in the City of Hamilton. It is called Karma Candy. We told them we had created some ideas for Canada Day 150 lollipops and they wrote back saying we could go on a tour of the factory!!! Canada’s Kids at Immaculate Conception School want to inspire lots of people across Canada to celebrate our great country, even after Canada’s 150th birthday is done!
