Sherwood Grade 9 Night

-

On Thursday, September 7, the Sherwood Ambassadors team ran the Grade 9 Night for all students interested in meeting new people in a stress-free environment. Although it was aimed at Grade 9s, all students were invited to take the opportunity to be social. This was the second year of the event and, once again, it was a huge success.

The night began right after school in the gymnasium with inclusion and community building games. These initiated conversations and introductions for students who might not feel comfortable doing so on their own. There was a mix of active games and calm conversation circles to appeal to all sorts of personalities.

Following the large group activities, the students chose their preferred “breakout session.” There was a “chill” session in the Library Learning Commons where students could chat and play games in an easy space; a retro video game station in the cafeteria with a Wii, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and original Nintendo; a “jam session” in the auditorium where students could play any instruments they wished and connect through music; a gym games session to let off some steam and build teamwork and leadership skills.

Students were encouraged to roam between breakout sessions, allowing them to interact with a variety of people. At around 6 p.m., a free pizza dinner was served, followed by the option of two sci-fi movies or a chance to relax and chat with their friends.

A few Grade 9s offered their thoughts on the event. “I had a great time,” said one student. “It was fun to meet new people by playing games together.” Another student mentioned that their favourite breakout session was the library “chill” zone: “I liked how we could choose to do our own thing while talking to people we didn’t know.”

Student success teacher Mr. Balazs organized and supervised the Grade 9 Night.
