The Hamilton Bulldogs and one of their star players are on a roll. We reveal who in our by-the-numbers breakdown of the OHL

73,000

The dollar amount raised for brain cancer research by the Kingston Frontenacs, who auctioned off specially-designed Tragically Hip jerseys last winter — a new OHL record. The team was among several that paid tribute to Gord Downie on their websites or social media in the wake of his death Tuesday. A league statement said it “joins the rest of Canada with heavy hearts following the passing of Mr. Gord Downie, a great Canadian artist who loved our country, the great game of hockey, and whose strength and determination was so inspirational for all Canadians coast to coast.”

1

The number of OHL grads mentioned by name in the band’s songs. Downie, a lifelong Boston Bruins fan, sings about NHL Hall of Famer and former Oshawa General Bobby Orr in “Fireworks.”

8

The number of consecutive games Will Bitten has at least a point. The Bulldogs forward, second in team scoring, has three goals and six assists over that stretch. The only game he hasn’t recorded a point was Hamilton’s season-opening loss to Niagara — the same as the team, which has points in each of its past eight games.

35.4

The average number of shots per game by the Bulldogs so far, which is fourth most in the league. The bad news for Hamilton is that high shot tally hasn’t meant more goals. Through nine games, the team has scored on just 7.6 per cent of its shots, which is less than all but two other teams — Saginaw and London — and is 15th in scoring at just under three goals per game.

4

The number of OHL teams in this week’s CHL Top 10, doubling last week’s tally. Sarnia jumped six spots to No. 2, Sault Ste. Marie remained steady at No. 6 and Owen Sound returned at No. 8 after dropping off the list a week ago. Peterborough also made its debut at No. 10 while Barrie, which is 7-2-0-1, earned an honourable mention.

3

The number of z’s in Attack forward Alan Lyszczarczyk’s name, which is, arguably, the most difficult to spell (and pronounce) in the OHL. Others likely to cause nightmares for play-by-play announcers are Peterborough’s Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, Sarnia’s Marko Jakovljevic, Saginaw’s Daniil Vertiy and Ottawa’s Nikita Okhotyuk.

10

The number of straight starts for Windsor goalie Michael DiPietro, 18, from Amherstburg. He has played the most minutes in the OHL (561), leads all goalies in saves (300), goals-against average (1.82) and save percentage (0.946).

18.17

The average age of a Bulldogs player this season, making the franchise the oldest in the OHL. Two years ago, when it relocated to Hamilton from Belleville, it was the league’s youngest.
