A Toronto man has admitted to intentionally running over a woman with his car in a Hamilton parking lot last year.

Douvainn Dean pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and advertising sexual services and was sentenced Friday to 30 months in jail. After credit for 536 days served in pretrial custody, his sentence is a little less than 13 months.

Dean admitted to deliberately running over Tundwa Kalonga in an empty parking lot at Main Street East and Hughson Street South around 8:25 p.m. July 3, 2016. She suffered a broken leg.

Kalonga had met Dean through an acquaintance of hers, said Hamilton police homicide unit Det. Ben Adams. He allegedly wanted to coerce her into being sexually trafficked, but she refused.

“He was in the business of trafficking young women,” Adams said. “They had only recently met and she was not interested in working for him.”

Police alleged Dean has trafficked women throughout the GTA. He has a criminal record and outstanding charges before the courts in Toronto.

It took some time for police to identify Dean, as he was initially only known as “Frank.” The case was a joint investigation between Hamilton homicide and human trafficking units.

Dean was eventually identified and arrested without incident in Toronto on Sept. 20, 2016.

He was originally charged with attempted murder, assault and material benefits from sexual services, but those charges were withdrawn in exchange for the plea.

Adams said the victim, who is not from Hamilton, is doing well, but will have lasting injuries from the broken leg.
