College slogans sounding insincere

RE: Put students first and end college strike (Nov. 8)

All around the city, I see the Mohawk College billboards and the promise that “We (heart symbol) our students.” I am beginning to doubt the sincerity of that statement. If the college really loved its students, it would be at the negotiating table working with the union to find a way to address faculty’s concerns and to get the students and their teachers back into class. College teachers are striking over issues that affect the quality of education for their students, ensuring that teachers have some (not complete) control over how courses are taught.

Faculty input into how courses are taught is important; the teachers are the ones who are involved with the students, know the material, know how their students learn it best, and really care about their students’ learning.

As a student considering my post-secondary options for next year, I’m going to judge Mohawk and the college system not by their easy slogans but how they stand up for quality education — something that has to happen with teachers and not against them. Beatrice Lloyd, Hamilton
