The photo was taken at Kingston Penitentiary, where he was doing time for stealing guns from a home in Delhi.

The moment was a crowning achievement for a man still in his 20s whose life had already been shaken by tragedy, addiction and years of crime.

Monture, eventually a father of three, was eager to return to Six Nations to lead a better life.

The same vortex of drugs and crime eventually caught up to him again.

It wouldn’t be long before his life was snuffed out. In February 2017, the 27-year-old was shot in the head.

The last image his mother, Roxanne FarmerMonture, saw of her son is the grim hospital surveillance footage that shows his limp legs and feet the afternoon of the shooting.

Three of Monture’s former associates have been charged with accessory after the fact to his murder. But no murder charge has been laid.

Nine months on, his grief-stricken family is frustrated police haven’t arrested the shooter.

Monture was reportedly found on the front lawn of a Tuscarora Road home on the afternoon of Feb. 21 with head injuries.

Police say “Good Samaritans” took him to West Haldimand General Hospital in Hagersville at 4 p.m. He was later flown to Hamilton General where it was discovered he’d actually been shot.

It’s not clear who those Samaritans were.

But at least one of the three accused of accessory — who lives at the Tuscarora Road home — was with Monture when he was dropped off at West Haldimand General.

The circumstances are mysterious.
