Respect inclusivity for all

-

RE: Writer doesn’t speak for average citizen (Dec. 2)

I was encouraged to read the letter stating that the writer does not agree with Quebec’s recent face-covering ban.

As a longtime advocate of social justice, I too am opposed to the recent passing of Bill 62 in the province of Quebec. However, I disagree with Don Holland’s statement in which he indicates that most people would feel more threatened being approached by “an individual wearing dark glasses and hoodie as opposed to a woman in a niqab.”

Such judgment of character demonstrates xenophobia, regardless of the attire in question. These preconceived stereotypes not only perpetuate discrimination, they create animosity toward certain members of our community and often lead to racism.

Bill 62 legitimizes bigotry and discriminates against women who wear niqabs and burkas. The letter writer expresses the same views about individuals wearing hoodies and sunglasses. Such opinions threaten our right to freedom of expression, one of the underlying principles of democracy.

It is our responsibility as Canadians to create an environment of respect and inclusivity for all. It is only by doing so that we can move toward becoming the racially unified society we claim to be. Andrea Rado, Hamilton
