A message for the premier

- RE: Hydro rates

Dear Premier Wynne We see by this morning’s Spectator that you are continuing your pre-election goody program. Last election you bought off the teachers with a lucrative contract deal and now you are helping out the admin. side. In addition to all the other groups you have already “helped out” could you consider helping out our group?

We are senior citizens, in our case into our 80s and we could for both health reasons and personal enjoyment use a hot meal. Because of your high and time-of-day Hydro rates, we are forced to either eat a warm bowl of porridge at 6 a.m. or eat cold cereal at 8 a.m. Lunch isn’t bad because we can light the gas BBQ and heat up a hamburger or even choose a healthy salad but it is very difficult to fry eggs on a BBQ in the winter, early morning.

The same goes at our evening meal, we either can eat a cold sandwich at 5 p.m. or wait until after 7 p.m. to have a warm plate of pasta. We do appreciate the fact that on the weekend and holidays you allow some relaxation on time-of-day so we do get some relief from cold meals.

If it is not possible to make some changes to accommodate this aging group on compassionate grounds, also consider that we are potential voters. You might also suggest the Hydro sell off its excess to seniors rather than pay a neighbouring jurisdiction to take it. After giving this your utmost consideration if you can’t change the hydro system, perhaps you could fund each seniors household with a natural gas appliance so we could have hot meals without using your expensive hydro!
