It’s time for real men to speak up
RE: The ‘Silence Breakers’ who started a movement (Dec. 12)
A groundswell of revulsion against some men demeaning women is sweeping across the world. After centuries of being abused and undervalued by men, countless women are shouting “no more!”
How encouraging it is to read Time selected as Person of the Year the Silence Breakers, women who rose up to decry sexual harassment in a broadening #MeToo outcry.
Much ink and bytes have been used to point out the offenders in many walks of life. Schadenfreude may be expressed by some pious men who point to the misfortune that has befallen their sinful brethren. Well now, how hypocritical! Who looks for the first stone to cast?
All men put their pants on one leg at a time. Are you different? It’s time for all men to take a long look in a mirror, and ask how fair to women have they been. In their homes, finances, jobs, hiring practices, military service, places of worship, including films, videos, texts, magazines, and particularly today in politics?
Where does popular expediency (everyone is doing it) end and social justice (simple equality) begin? When will men appreciate how fortunate they are that women bear and raise their children, soften their rough edges, match their skills, complement them, and contribute 50 per cent to the economy?
In Canada and America, real men are not wimps. Norm Stefnitz, Burlington
