Stoney Creek ‘family trouble’ turns fatal

Man, 60, stabbed in year’s 10th homicide

- NATALIE PADDON

A 60-year-old man is dead and another man is charged with second-degree murder after police raced to a Stoney Creek Mountain home to investigate “family trouble” Wednesday.

Hamilton officers said they were called to 134 Highland Rd. W., near Aubrey Avenue, over an “altercation” just before noon.

When they arrived, police said, they found a 60-year-old man in the doorway of the home, suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The man was transported to the Hamilton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 12:30 p.m.

Police said they are not looking for any additional suspects and there are no concerns for public safety.

The man charged with second-degree murder is expected to appear in court on Thursday morning, police said.

The victim’s name is not being released until extended family can be notified, police said.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate.

Const. Jerome Stewart would not comment on the relationship between the two men, the age of the man charged or whether both men lived at the address, which is in a residential neighbourhood just down the street from Saltfleet Secondary School.

But a next-door neighbour said she believed two men who lived at the house were father and son.

“It’s terrible, especially this time of year,” said the neighbour, who identified herself as Cindy but declined to give her last name.

She said she saw an older man taken out of the house on a stretcher and that CPR was performed on him.

“There was blood everywhere,” she added.

A younger man was arrested in the driveway of the home, she said.

She said what appeared to be blood spatter at the end of the driveway came from the younger man, who she thought was in his late 20s.

Paramedics could be seen bandaging his hands on scene, she said.

Cindy said the family — who she believed to be a mom, dad and son — had lived in the home for close to 20 years, but she did not know them well.

She said she would talk to the man she believed to be the dad over the fence in the backyard.

Police tape remained up around 134 Highland Rd. W. Wednesday afternoon.

The scene was quiet — one officer stood on the front steps of the home and a cruiser was parked outside on the street.

What appeared to be blood could be seen on the driveway, close to the sidewalk, as well as what looked like a small blue towel.

This is Hamilton’s 10th homicide of 2017.

Police said Monday afternoon the investigation was in its “infancy,” but stressed there is no threat to public safety.

“There never was a threat to public safety,” Stewart said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Det. Andrew Coughlan at 905-546-3874 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
