Trudeau’s support remains strong

RE: An ethics breach that should stick to Trudeau (Dec. 22)

Listing many concerns about the Liberal party, Tim Harper admits that approval ratings remain steady.

In fact, Nanos Research, which accurately predicted the 2015 results, has consistently issued weekly results like the report published Dec. 15: Preferred PM ... Trudeau ... 47 per cent ... Scheer 22 per cent ... Singh 19 per cent.

Voting intention ... Trudeau 42 per cent ... Scheer 29 per cent ... Singh 19 per cent.

Subject to change, of course, but the opposition has a long way to go.

Halfway through, Canadians seem satisfied with the current Liberal scorecard. As of Dec. 26, of 226 promises made, 58 have not been started, 72 are works in progress, 58 have been achieved and 38 were broken. Our global image has also seen a dramatic improvement.

Of the 38 broken, far more important to me and many was that a key promise change to our electoral system was not kept. That betrayal is far more important than that much maligned Trudeau Xmas visit, for which an apology has been made.

Once again we will head into an election where a party with some 40 per cent of total votes, may get 100 per cent of the power, the 60 per cent of voters, none. Perhaps there is a reason that 28 of 36 OECD countries use a proportional system.

Only the U.S. has an older, more complex and less democratic system than we have. I very much doubt that either the vacation or electoral system change issue will have much influence come 2019. Pity about the latter. Richard Ring, Grimsby
