Trump or no, America will be great again

RE: Trump presidency

-

I have always considered myself to be a Canadian patriot, with only marginal American connections from the consumption of American media. Since 2016 and the election of the president, my view has changed.

His finagling of the law has resulted in a steep learning curve for me of American politics. My assumption is that the antics from the White House will give us a much greater understanding of the weaknesses and strengths of their system. Specifically, that no one man or woman should bear the responsibility of nuclear weapons strikes.

My feeling is that all will be well; the Cuban Missile Crisis brought us all much closer to the edge of catastrophe.

The schoolyard grandstanding of the new tax bill, and the demonizing of countries that didn’t vote with the Americans for the move of their embassy to Jerusalem, does give me pause. However, the president is such a boob that the world leaders know what he is going to do before he does. I never imagined that any American president would be a political marionette for the other world powers.

The Americans are our brothers and sisters, and since the election, I feel more like a North American than anything. America will find its greatness again, not because of the president, but from what we all learn as a result of his Don-foolery. John D. Niessen, Dundas
