Golden Globe host Seth Meyers says don’t give guys credit for wearing black tuxedos
Many stars are expected to wear all black to the Golden Globes to protest sexual misconduct in Hollywood — but host Seth Meyers made it clear men shouldn’t be praised for simply wearing what they always do.
“I think it’s important that no guy tries to take credit for wearing a black tuxedo,” Meyers told Us Weekly.
Numerous high-profile actresses and actors — including Allison Janney, Saoirse Ronan and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson — have confirmed they plan to wear black to the awards ceremony in a show of solidarity against sexual harassment and assault.
Meyers said he’ll also be wearing black, but added to Us Weekly, “I’m not like, ‘Hey, I want credit.’ You know what I mean?”
Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain are among the other stars expected to wear black at Sunday’s show, People reported last month.
Meyers said he’s excited to see so many powerful women come together to take a stand.
“The solidarity we’re seeing right now is really exciting because even though this was a remarkably bad year in what we heard, there’s also this real chance and I feel like opportunity for optimism going forward, especially when you see ... these really smart, really empathetic women are coming together as one,” he told the magazine.
His comments come in the same week he hinted Hollywood’s sexual misconduct problems will be covered in his opening monologue.
“As far as talking about anything in the news right now, it seems like this year more than ever Hollywood has its own internal politics that obviously deserve to be talked about,” he told People.
This Sunday’s show marks the first time Meyers has ever hosted the Golden Globes, which air on the same network as his late-night NBC show.
