Let’s vote on teachers’ right to strike

RE: Teachers have a fundamental right to strike (Jan. 3)

-

Roy J. Adams writes about teachers’ fundamental right to strike and places teachers and their unions above many of us. Rights are something afforded to all of us, as in equal rights for all. Education is a right, something most modern teachers have a problem with.

Since many of us cannot strike, that right becomes a privilege, a fringe benefit. It’s not your right to strike just because you have the right, especially when your wage demands are far above anything most of us could only dream of. The only reason the government honoured this privilege is because they have no choice and also the fact they’re thinking about their own hides.

I vote for a referendum on this privilege for teachers to strike, that should be my right since I’m paying the bills, not some government minister worried about polls. Red Taylor, Hamilton
