Canada has its own disputed territory

-

RE: Canada should have spoken out against U.S. (Jan. 10)

Is it not hypocritical of Canada to abstain in a vote against U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and move his embassy there, when Canada’s own capital is on unceded Algonquin territory? Has the UN or international community voted to condemn or boycott Canada for situating its parliamentary buildings on disputed lands of the Ottawa Valley, for its constant land developments on unceded territories, or for its economic developments that have adversely affected and/or displaced many aboriginal people?

The Algonquin land claim has never been settled but has dragged on for years. If it is ever settled, Canada will require the Algonquin people to give up title to Ottawa. And, like all land claims, giving up title to the remaining land occupied by Canadians is expected in the “peace” process of land claim settlements. Would Canadians tolerate aboriginal people firing missiles into the Ottawa Valley or building tunnels into Canadian cities because the land claims process is hampered, or they are not getting what they want in the deal? Why do we turn a blind eye to Palestinians doing this?

It is Arab Palestinian leaders and their followers who continually inflame tensions, refuse to co-operate in the Israeli/Palestinian peace process, and are bent on Israel’s destruction rather than the two-state solution put forth by the UN General Assembly. Jennifer Asimoudis, Ancaster
