City issues cold weather alert

-

Hamilton’s medical officer of health issued a cold weather alert for early Tuesday.

Temperatures were expected to dip to -17 C by 4 a.m., with the wind chill making it feel like -21. A cold weather alert is issued when anticipated weather conditions are at or below -15 C or -20 with the wind chill.

The public is reminded that exposure to cold weather can be harmful to your health. Wind always makes it feel colder, and increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

The city is asking people to call, visit, or check on vulnerable family, friends and neighbours during this period.

Community agencies working with the homeless and vulnerable were kicking in their procedures to provide shelter.

The city is reminded people that its recreation centres are available during regular hours for those who need to keep warm. The MacNab Transit Terminal will also stay open until transit service ends.

The public can also report the location of a person in need of shelter to the Salvation Army at 905-527-1444, ext. 0.

The best place during a cold alert is indoors, but if you must be outside, public health is reminding people to:

• Dress in layers of clothing and keep inner layers dry because wet clothes increase the risk of danger.

• Protect the face, ears and hands with a scarf, hat, and gloves.

• Wear dry socks to protect your feet.

• Drink warm fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol.

• Avoid strenuous exercise. For more information go to www.hamilton.ca/cold
