Neighbourhood’s plea to drivers: Slow down!

- CATHIE COWARD

About 35 residents of the Durand neighbourhood gathered at the crosswalk at Queen and Herkimer streets Monday morning holding signs appealing to drivers on Queen to slow down.

Organizers Tom Flood and his wife Tanya Jurkovich say they are especially concerned for children coming and going at St. Joseph’s, Earl Kitchener, and Ryerson schools. Jurkovich said last Monday while walking her two boys to St Joesph’s she noticed two cars up on the sidewalk at Queen and Stanley that had been involved in an accident.

That was not the first collision in that area of Queen Street this year. Jurkovich and Flood decided it would be a good idea to create some sort of event to remind drivers “we live here and cross the streets on a daily basis, so slow down.”

Jurkovich says she is vigilant when walking along Queen with her children, making sure they walk on the inside of the sidewalk. She also says residents recognize this a problem throughout the city.
