Slam Dunk Poetry

- BY ABIGAIL GHENT, GRADE 7, MOUNT HOPE

You need to earn your place on the court basketball is a constantly moving door opening and closing with opportunity to score and you need to be ready for it

the scoreboard is like kindergartens on a seesaw constantly moving up and down not stopping until they’ve finished

defense is important stick to your person like glue i’ve got six you’ve got seven just stick to your man

there’s a form to shooting and you need to sign it layups are key you just need to do them right two steps shoot and, BOOM you got an A+ on your basketball test

you’re part of a team it’s not a one-man show don’t be a ball hog you’ve got him or her just use them

dribbling is key coach is yelling ‘below your knee’ dribble the ball as if your uniform is a belt of knives waiting... listening for the pop, or the bang of your broken ball

don’t think badly of your coach when he makes you do layups until your arms hurt or when he makes you do suicides until you’re gasping for air like a fish don’t think badly of your coach when he yells at you to try harder when you already feel like you’re about to pass out don’t think badly of your coach when he makes you dribble for what feels like hours or when he just. doesn’t. let you. take a break just thank him

everyone wants to win you your coach your team your opponent do what you want but do what’s right

whatever you do try hard work hard play hard and you’ll succeed!
