Pet Responsibilities – Are you ready to be a pet owner?

- BY MILANA HUNTING, GRADE 6, ELIZABETH BAGSHAW

Having a pet is a BIG responsibility! It’s not as easy as one thinks. There are a lot of things a pet owner has to consider to be a good pet owner. Safety, health, well-being and training are just a few to mention.

You have to train your pet to walk on a leash, if it does not know how to already. Not only that, you have to teach your pet to listen to their owner’s commands. For example, sit, stand, stop and come. Some pets may even need you to train them to go to the washroom. You also have to train your pet to be around people and strangers. When you get a pet, you have to train your pet to do a lot of things like tricks.

Also, when you get a pet, you have to be responsible for it. You have to make sure you wash it, give it food, water and a safe home. That means you have to make sure that your pet will not get into something unsafe. It might even ruin something in your house. You have to move breakable things out of your house. You also have to make time on your schedule to be with your pet. Your pet would enjoy spending time with you and a bond will form between you two. If you do all these things your pet will love and appreciate you!

Another fact you have to consider is to be a good pet owner you have to make big decisions for your pet. It is one of the hardest things that you will have to do. For example, picking a name for your pet and even picking a pet is hard for some people. You also have to make plans on who is going to take care of your pet when you’re gone and not home. You may even have to do research on your pet to find out how to take care of it and what to feed it.

As you can see, taking care of pets is a BIG responsibility! You have to do a lot of things in order to keep it healthy, safe and happy! I hope that what I wrote will help you to decide if you are ready to be a pet owner? So, ask yourself… Are you READY to be a pet owner?
