We’re choosing the wrong political leaders

RE: WE DESERVE THE LEADERS WE GET (FEB. 10)

True, but why is it so? We should elect individuals who are open to different views and can offer the best solutions to our problems, not based on party loyalty or personal interest but on what is good and right for all.

Wishful thinking! Our society has become one of instant gratification and entitlement. The new motto is no taxes but more services. In this materialistic society, what matters is what is best for me. Assets, not character and values, define a person. Members of the middle class are constantly pushing MPPs for more goodies for themselves at the cost of mortgaging the future of their children and grandchildren. Political parties know how to cater to this new self-centred society by appealing to the most basic instinct of voters, greed. What is best for the province is now second fiddle to what is best for the party.

Change will only come about when voters decide to support candidates with compassion and sound ethical and moral principles, with a proven record of credibility and trust, with empathy, who believe that the first purpose as MPP is to enrich society, who are humble enough to accept that what is good for the party is not necessarily what is good for the province and who will refuse to toe the party line to please a power-hungry leader.
