What is the Creative Kids Design-an-Ad Contest?
The Creative Kids Design-an-Ad Contest is an exciting program offered annually to area educators that teaches young students about print advertising. It is proudly run in partnership with Newspaper in Education, the Advertising department at The Hamilton Spectator and a number of local businesses. Curriculum-based lessons about print advertising are provided to teachers by Newspaper in Education. Students are then invited to submit their own advertisements for a select local business to the Creative Kids Design-an-Ad Contest. Each business carefully reviews the designs submitted to them, and have the difficult task of selecting one winning design. This publication, Creative Kids, is proud to showcase the winning ads.
What is Newspaper in Education?
The daily newspaper is a flexible and adaptable “living textbook” that can be used in virtually every teaching situation. Recognizing this, educators and newspaper personnel began the Newspaper in Education program more than fifty years ago. The Hamilton Spectator's Newspaper in Education program began operating in 1975. Newspaper in Education is committed to promoting literacy among students of all ages by providing educators tools to expand their students' educational experiences using resource packages that utilize the daily newspaper.
Newspaper in Education is also committed to making the programs accessible to all educators. For over 40 years, internal fundraising efforts and the support provided by community partners and The Hamilton Spectator's readers has helped Newspaper in Education distribute millions of newspapers along with teaching packages free of charge or at minimal cost to area schools.
Teachers recognize that the daily newspaper is a practical teaching resource. Its real-world relevance promotes practical literacy and offers young minds the opportunity to develop a lasting sense of social and civic responsibility.
Just as important, learning with newspapers is fun! The Hamilton Spectator adds a powerful dimension to learning, as students learn new concepts, build academic skills, develop critical thinking and keep in touch with current events.
