Educating landlords and tenants about rental insurance
Name: Kyle Melko Age: 28
Position: Commercial account executive with Acumen Insurance Group in Hamilton.
Job description: My main focus is to continue to develop and grow an insurance program for landlords and property managers specifically designed for the unique challenges and exposures of managing a student rental property. I work with my clients to provide the best insurance solutions, while empowering them with knowledge of the student rental insurance industry. I also manage and grow a portfolio of clients with more general insurance needs.
How did you come to be in this job?
I went to Mohawk College and graduated from their Insurance Program in 2010. In the final semester they host, in my opinion, the best “industry night” out of any post-secondary program. At this event, you’re basically “speed interviewing” with a large number of employers from a wide range of companies. I connected with my current employer that night and after a brief stint in the sports insurance industry, I’m back with Acumen Insurance. I started insuring student rentals in the Hamilton area but have since grown my clientele to across the province.
What gets you up in the morning?
I enjoy the challenge of ensuring people have a positive experience when it comes to obtaining insurance. My job gives me the opportunity every day to meet new people, grow my professional network while also growing as
a person.
Lessons learned? Stay true to yourself and never become distracted by the opinion of others. The only limitations are the ones you put on yourself. What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle and never giving up.
Roots: I grew up splitting time between Binbrook and the Rosedale area. Attended Mohawk College and am currently living in Mount Hope with an office in Stoney Creek. The wide range of municipalities and their offerings is what makes Hamilton great to me. Recent social media post(s): tious identity and variety of landscapes and culture. It’s tough for me to narrow it down to what would make our city better because I think what we need to do is better embrace the fact that we are a city that gives opportunity to anyone to be who they want to be personally or professionally.
What’s next for you? To continue to grow a portfolio of great clients and experience more of what our city has to offer.
