High sports inequality in Ancaster

RE: GENDER EQUITY

It is unbelievable to think that in 2018 there is still inequality in sports between men and women. Women have made it a long way to achieve equality in sports, especially in schools. As a player of the girls’ varsity hockey team at Ancaster High School, I have firsthand witnessed the injustices between the girls’ and the boy’s teams.

The girls’ team is required to use the boys old jerseys, and some girls have to wear different jerseys during the regular season games because there weren’t enough for our 15-player team. The boys’ team has two sets of brand new jerseys that they got this year for their games, and they also have jerseys for practices. They also all got socks to match their new jerseys, while the girls have no matching socks.

The boys also get more opportunities for tournaments and they were lucky enough to go to Ottawa for a tournament and all the girls’ team got was a one-day pre-season tournament consisting of not even full-length games at the local arena. It is unfathomable that this is still occurring today in our schools.
