Space Jellyfish

- BY JACOB REZO, GRADE 12

Floating listlessly through the void, surrounded by a sea of stars, I glimpse a peculiar sight. The vast, strange universe which I set out to explore often gifts me imagery that never cease to defy comprehension. Little surprises me any longer, yet I found myself staring, mouth agape, at a shape that engulfed my vision. Outside of my viewing port there seemed to be some sort of creature. How this was possible I will never know, but regardless, my eyes did not deceive me. This being was vast and formless, its body appearing to drift in an unseen current. Marveling at the unknown entity, I glimpsed true beauty. An otherworldly, spectral beauty that nearly brought me to tears. It was as if the very cosmos itself were emanating out from the creature. Blues deeper than the oceans swirled along its cloud-like body, in a slow ethereal dance with reds that made the blood within my veins seem pale in comparison. Greens and purples, more vivid than the northern lights flowed throughout it. Broken apart periodically by oranges and yellows, the intensity of dying stars. I was entranced by this heavenly creature. My focus never strayed from its incredible visage, my mind missed and yearned for the sight of it, even as I gazed directly at it, unblinking. My soul could not bear being separated from such magnificence. I had made up my mind, my fate now written. I must know this creature truly. No fear plagued my mind as I tumbled through the blackness toward my goal. No pain assaulted my mind as my body ceased to be, and became one, with the creature I could not name.
