Reflecting on D.R.E.A.M.S.

- BY VAYSHALI PATEL, GRADE 12

As a grade 12 student who has previously been on a mission trip to the Amazon Jungle in Ecuador through “Me to We,” I had high standards for the Bishop Ryan Dominican Republic Education and Medical Support (D.R.E.A.M.S.) trip. Personally, I saw this opportunity as a great way to disconnect myself from social media to truly embrace the Dominican culture, specifically in the community of Los Corozos.

As cliché as this might sound I can truly say this was a life changing experience. I’ve come back to Canada and I’ve learned to have a greater appreciation for things such as my shower, that supplies me with an unlimited amount of hot water, a toilet that I can flush toilet paper down, and most importantly I’ve learned to appreciate others more. There is something special about these trips that cause me to grow in love and faith, love for myself and others, and faith that those struggling for basic human needs will soon be helped. This trip helped solidify my future aspiration of becoming a physician and working for a non-profit organization such as ‘Doctors Without Borders’ someday. Going to the Dominican I only knew a couple of Spanish words, but that did not matter for the people of Los Corozos. They welcomed us with a radiant smile and loving arms, they did not judge me because I could not speak the language but they accepted the energy we collectively brought forward. I am grateful that in the end we still created a lasting relationship that will remain between us and the people of Los Corozos forever.
