Believe it! As spring kicks in, we’re under a freezing-rain, ice-storm watch
Again! The weather misery this spring seems never-ending, with the latest forecast warning of freezing rain Thursday and a possible — yes — ice storm for the weekend.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Wednesday morning saying a fast-moving, low-pressure system will cross southern Ontario on Thursday, bringing precipitation that may start off as freezing rain in the morning before changing to rain.
The freezing rain should be brief but may persist for a couple of hours in the northern and higher terrain areas.
But look out for Saturday and Sunday, when a slow-moving, low-pressure system approaches and increasing northeasterly winds draw in colder air from the Arctic to change everything to freezing rain.
This has the potential to lead to a major ice storm in some areas, with ice accumulations of over 20 millimetres possible.
This, combined with gusty winds of 60 km/h expected, could result in power outages from falling tree limbs and power lines.
Travel is also expected to be hazardous.
However, the outlook for what areas will be most affected on the weekend is still “considerably uncertain” according to the weather statement.
Environment Canada advises people to check for alerts and weather forecasts for the next few days.
