Public transit use

-

SIGNIFICANTLY FEWER WORKERS in Hamilton use public transit to get to work than elsewhere in Ontario. Just 10 per cent of Hamilton workers take public transit to work, compared to 15 per cent provincially.

Roughly three per cent of workers in Flamborough and four per cent of Ancaster workers take public transit to work.

Sara Mayo, of the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton, said it’s no surprise that the highest rates of public transit use for work are located in areas well served by the transit system.

“We can’t expect people to take transit in areas we’re underserving,” she said.

“The city is transit hungry. I get the sense people really want to use transit but just feel the service isn’t up to par yet.”

Less than one per cent of Hamilton workers — a little more than 2,200 people — bike to work, and about five per cent walk, about the same proportion as the rest of the province.
