RE: ALL ABOUT US — INVISIBLE MINORITIES (APRIL 14)

This article does not paint the whole picture of Flamborough.

It overlooks the hundreds of migrant workers welcomed with open arms here every spring. Hard working people leave their own families and countries behind to serve our agribusiness and landscape industry for the season. Migrant workers are an important part of our local economy and the fabric of our community.

Additionally, a lack of strategic investment has left Flamborough with serious challenges which may not serve to attract newcomers. Flamborough does not have a community centre where newcomers would enjoy lowcost fitness, arts and swim programs. Although our library has one room which we call our “seniors centre,” we do not have a full-service seniors’ centre, which would provide important socialization to combat isolation and programming for vulnerable immigrant seniors. We do not have appropriate transit, nor the bike paths, that would take newcomers without a vehicle to jobs, downtown Hamilton, Mohawk College, McMaster University, or to nearby hospitals.

This article actually highlights the lack of investment in Flamborough’s services and infrastructure, which fails to attract new immigrants to our community. Susan McKechnie, Flamborough
