Speed storytelling for a cause
Local rock musician Tom Wilson and Hamilton Spectator columnist Jeff Mahoney will be among a dozen storytellers taking part in the sixth annual 6-Minute Memoir on Friday, May 4.
The event features local celebrities telling stories within a strict six-minute time limit. This year’s theme is “Inheritance.”
Other participants include former Spectator publisher Dana Robbins, blogger Suzanne Foreman, singers Jude Johnson and Lyla Micklos, and playwrights Jennifer Walton and Marianne Daly.
Wilson has been gaining headlines across the country due to the publication of his book “Beautiful Scars,” a memoir which recounts his late-in-life discovery of his Mohawk roots.
Organizer Anne Bokma says Robbins will share a similar story about discovering his mother’s Métis heritage, an ancestry she kept secret from him.
Meanwhile, Mahoney will tell the audience a tale about his colourful Liverpudlian grandmother, Gladys.
Bokma says last year this event drew 250 people and raised $5,000 for charity.
Proceeds will be split between The Longer Table, an initiative of the Refugee Sponsorship Committee of the Niagara Diocese of Hamilton, and First Unitarian Church of Hamilton. The event takes place Friday, May 4, 7:30 p.m., at the First Unitarian Church. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.
