Pick a play day with an alpaca, prep your garden beds with compost or dig into a tower of pancakes. There’s a smorgasbord of happenings for you this weekend.
Compost days
The City of Hamilton starts its first Compost and Wood-chip Giveaways on Saturday. Residents are asked to bring their own buckets or containers, shovel and elbow grease to the giveaway location starting at 7 a.m. Locations on Saturday include the Ancaster public works yard, 501 Shaver Rd., and Joe Sams Leisure Park, 752 Centre Rd., Waterdown. More giveaway events are planned May 5 and 12.
Paris to Ancaster Beep, beep
More than 400 vendors will be gathering at the Road Runners Car Club’s 34th annual Swap Meet and Car Show at the Ancaster Fairgrounds Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $8, children under 12 get in for free. roadrunnerscarclub.com
Alpaca people
Ever pet an Alpaca? Here’s your chance. The Alpaca Ontario Spring Show is Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at West Niagara Agricultural Centre, 7402 Mud St. W., Grassie. It’s a hands-on experience where you can walk an alpaca, watch shearing, a fashion show, silent auction, shows, vendors and more.
Pack a stack
All you can eat pancake breakfast Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, at Erland Lee Museum, 552 Ridge Rd., Stoney Creek. Bring the whole family — and a big appetite. Adults $8, children 12 and under $4. Pancakes and sausages generously provided by the Battlefield Optimists. All proceeds to support the Erland Lee Museum. For more information, call 905-662-2691.
Walking history
Westfield Sundays are back. History comes alive any Sunday and statutory holiday at Westfield Heritage Village until October, 12:30 to 4 p.m. Restored and staffed with costumed interpreters, the building captures the true charm of early Canadian culture. Westfield is located at 1049 Kirkwall Rd., Rockton. 519-621-8851. Admission is $11, $6.50 for youth and free for children aged five and under.
‘Little Mermaid’ live
Disney’s classic film is live and on stage at the Citadel Theatre, Saturday. Beautiful mermaid Ariel should be a happy girl — she lives in an enchanted undersea country, her father is a king, and she has the most beautiful singing voice. But she is a passionate, headstrong teenager, and wants what she cannot have — to live on land. Presented by Hammer Entertainment, show times are 2 and 7:30 p.m. Music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, book by Doug Wright.
