Pedestrian signals approved at Mohawk and East 45th
Hamilton councillors have approved installing pedestrian signals near the intersection of East 45th Street and Mohawk Road East.
Mountain Coun. Tom Jackson had requested the signals to improve pedestrian safety, especially for seniors within the neighbourhood.
He said residents had requested a new safety measure for them to cross Mohawk Road.
The cost is estimated to be about $250,000. Staff stated the design and installation of the signals would be done at the earliest opportunity in 2018.
The city has already constructed a pedestrian crossing area on Mohawk Road East, near East 45th Street. All that is needed for a safe crossing is the signals.
Hamilton has been attempting to improve pedestrians’ safety since 2013 when it was labelled as one of the most dangerous cities in Ontario for pedestrians.
The city has been experimenting with reducing speed limits in neighbourhoods to 40 km/h, as well as painting 103 ladder crossings at intersections, and installing pedestrian crossovers throughout the community.
Scenic Drive makeover
Drivers could soon see some relief as Hamilton council has approved rehabilitating Scenic Drive.
The road, which city staff said further “deteriorated” over the winter, will be repaired from West 32nd to Garth Street, along with Denlow Avenue .
The projected cost is $900,000 with the money coming from the Ward 8 area fund. Staff will attempt to fit the project into this year’s construction schedule.
