Quit rewarding those who harm us

RE: BUYING CANADIAN

This letter is in response to a letter by a couple advocating that we Canadians spend our tax dollars in Canada rather than the USA. Good for them for stating a problem that has existed for many years, long before Trump. Consider the following:

Heinz threw 880 people out of work in Leamington by moving ketchup production to the USA.

Kellogg’s threw another 800 out of work in London by moving breakfast cereal production to the USA.

Bick’s (part of Smucker’s) threw 600 out of work in Dunnville by moving pickle production to the USA.

Hershey’s Chocolates threw 400 out of work in Smiths Falls by moving chocolate confectionary production to the USA (or maybe Mexico).

Campbell’s Soups has announced that it will throw 280 out of work in Toronto by moving soup production to the USA later this year or next.

These are just five examples of a larger problem. Why are all of these products the highest selling in their areas even though there are Canadian made brands (often superior quality) available?

I have come to the conclusion that Canadians are incredibly apathetic or unaware regarding an issue that is very important to our citizens and our economy. I hope that it is apathy or lack of awareness because that can be remediated.

Quit rewarding those who have done us harm. Check the labels and buy Canadian.
