Taxi crashes near central police station

Hamilton police say no one was injured when a stolen taxi mounted the curb and came to rest outside the doors of central station Sunday night. The Blue Line cab was stolen from the area of Fennell Avenue and Governors Boulevard shortly before 11 p.m., police said. The man was allegedly a customer who had a “physical exchange” with the driver, before driving off, narrowly missing parked cars as he travelled to King William Street. Police said the taxi had a blown out front tire and sparks were flying from the rims as the vehicle mounted the curb and came to rest a few feet from the police headquarte­rs sign. The driver was arrested at the scene. The 29-year-old man of no fixed address is facing charges of robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and four counts of breaching probation. He was to appear in court Monday. during the work, between Aberdeen Avenue and Herkimer Street. The improvemen­ts, which are the result of a safety audit, will be made using pavement markings and knock down sticks. The work includes:

• A designated lane for southbound drivers turning left from Queen onto Aberdeen;

• No left turns onto Stanley Avenue for northbound drivers. A median island on Queen Street South to block illegal left turns onto Stanley Avenue Next summer Queen Street South is scheduled to be converted to two-way traffic between Herkimer and Main streets.
