Celebrating Our Diversity
The Diversity Committee at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School has been going strong for over 16 years! The goal of this Committee is to bring awareness of the varying cultures and diverse backgrounds within our school community, and to help foster and nurture a safe and accepting school environment for all.
The student committee members with the guidance and support of our advisors participate in many initiatives and activities for the whole student body throughout the school year. Some activities include the welcome potluck for newcomers, collaboration with the Utopia club in the annual Gandhi Peace Walk, carolling alongside the Culture of Life group at the senior’s home, participation in the board-wide Diversity conference, Black History Month activities, Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week campaign, cultural and social justice awareness activities, and of course our annual Diversity Talent Show!
Last week’s talent event, ‘Knight of Culture,’ was truly a night of diversity. We showcased the unique talents of individuals from various cultural backgrounds, each with a special gift creating a diverse array of performances. The committee members and performers worked energetically to put on a great show! Talents that were showcased included various dances, incredible singers, powerful spoken word acts and passionate instrumental performances. Culturally diverse food displays from our Food and Culture classes, art displays from the art classes, and mask displays by the drama classes, jazz band intermission music, and cultural refreshments were also a great contribution to the night
The proceeds from this year’s event will go towards two worthy causes; the De Mazenod Door Outreach Program and MORE Outreach.
We are so thankful for all of the school and community support in helping us put together the ‘Knight of Culture’! We also would like to specifically thank all the volunteers, our advisors, the performers, as well as all of the attendees of the night.
We, the Diversity Committee, look forward to next year’s ‘Knight of Culture’ and will close off our school year with a cast party and cultural potluck.
