SIU investigating ATV crash that sent man to hospital with serious injuries

-

A 35-year-old man suffered serious injuries after he crashed his ATV into an OPP cruiser on the QEW Monday morning.

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating the crash, which occurred when the ATV started making its way back toward the highway after getting off at Eastport Drive.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, the OPP’s Burlington detachment started getting calls about a man on an ATV on the QEW around 10 a.m.

Officers tried to stop the driver, but he kept going, the SIU said in a news release.

A female passenger who was also on the ATV was not seriously injured, according to the news release.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said one person was in police custody.

Following the crash, Eastport Drive at the lift bridge remained closed throughout the day until 5 p.m.

It’s unclear how long the ATV was on the QEW before the driver exited near the Burlington Skyway.

Hamilton police said they were also called to assist.

The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the incident.

One subject officer and three witness officers have been designated so far.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates incidents involving police in Ontario where someone is seriously injured, killed or there is an allegation of sexual assault.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
