RANDLE REEF
Project name: Randle Reef Contaminated Sediment Remediation Project Total cost: $138.9 million
Where: Hamilton Harbour, near Stelco property, north of Burlington Street East near Birch Avenue.
Phase I: 2016 to June 2018 — Construction of the Engineered Containment Facility (ECF).
Phase II: July 2016 to December 2018 — Dredging contaminated sediment in the area and placing it into the ECF. Phase III: Spring/summer of 2018 to December 2021 — Sediment dewatering inside the ECG and capping the facility. By the numbers 60 hectares: total area of contamination in and around Randle Reef 695,000 cubic metres: Amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and heavy metal-contaminated sediment to be encapsulated. 3,400: Number of steel sheets used weighing a total of 9,000 tonnes.
Why is the project being done?
Longtime coal tar and other industrial pollution has left a legacy of heavily-polluted sediments with PAHs and heavy metals that are highly toxic to fish, wildlife and humans.
Who is paying for it?
$46.3 million each from the federal government and the province. $14 million each from the City of Hamilton, U.S. Steel Canada and the Port Authority.
$2.3 million from the City of Burlington and $2 million from Halton Region.
