Need for speed nets charges

- MIKE ZETTEL

It was supposed to be a five-hour tour in fancy cars through Niagara’s idyllic roads. But instead the operator of an exotic car rental company and his customers were halted in their tracks and four of the cars were seized after several were clocked going more than 50 km/h over the speed limit.

On Wednesday at around 11:45 a.m., officers stopped six cars — including a Lamborghini, a McLaren and a Porsche — taking part in a five-hour tour of the region from Stoney Creek to Niagara Falls.

The six cars are owned by Ultimate Exotics, which is based out of Stoney Creek, and are driven by customers on the VIP tour.

Each driver has the opportunity to drive each of the exotic cars, switching at certain points along the tour. Police had received numerous complaints about speeding in the region and had learned the tour would be taking place. They were ready for them.

Police officers from the traffic enforcement unit and uniform patrol positioned themselves along the route in Niagara-onthe-Lake anticipating their arrival. When officers clocked several of the cars going more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit, the entire group was stopped, including the tour operator leading them.

As a result, all six drivers were charged with various offences, including four who had their licences suspended, as well as vehicles towed and seized, for seven days. Among those charged are a 37-year-old Hamilton man, who was driving a grey 2010 Porsche Cayenne 124 km/h in a 70 km/h zone; a 58-year-old Burlington man, who was driving an orange 2016 Lamborghini 117 km/h; and a 25-year-old Toronto man, who was driving a red 2014 McLaren 137 km/h.
