Police investigating after teen assaulted in Gage Park
Group attacked boy during festival
Hamilton police say they are investigating after a 14-year-old was “ambushed and assaulted” by a group of people at Gage Park over the weekend.
Two paid-duty officers working at Gage Park Saturday night during A Midsummer’s Dream festival were notified about the assault, Det. Sgt. Shane Groombridge said Monday.
After finding the victim, they called for a “patrol response,” Groombridge said.
The 14-year-old boy who suffered minor injuries and was scheduled to see a family physician Monday, he said.
Police have received video of the incident and interviewed the victim, his parents and witnesses, Groombridge said.
“A number of the individuals involved have been identified,” he said.
Parents who saw video of the assault online have taken their children in to police and identified them, Groombridge said.
Police have spoken to them, but at this point, charges have not been laid as the investigation is still in its early stages, he said.
Groombridge said police are continuing to investigate what led to this attack.
“I’m not sure what the motive is,” he said.
It’s not yet known either if people involved in the attack were attending the annual colour festival, which is one of the largest in Canada.
Police are looking for additional video of the assault and ask that people who were at the event and saw what happened come forward with information.
Any witnesses are asked to contact police at 905-546-2921.
