1926 — Chicago White Sox pitcher Ted Lyons no-hits the Boston Red Sox, 6-0, in just 67 minutes at Fenway Park. 1931 — Babe Ruth hits his 600th home run as his New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Browns, 11-7. 1933 — Babe Ruth’s homer leads the American League to a 4-2 win in the first all-star game.
1936 — Future Hall-of-Famer Wilt Chamberlain is born in Philadelphia. The seven-foot-one centre went on to notch more than 31,000 points — or 30.1 per game — over the course of his 14-year NBA career.
1949 — The New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies on a forfeit, due to fans throwing debris.
1959 — Future NFLer Jim McMahon is born Jersey City. The quarterback went on to play for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears over the course of his 15-year pro career. 1975 — Rick and Paul Reuschel become the first brothers to pitch a combined shutout.
1976 — Al Bumbry hits the 17th inside-the-park home run in Baltimore Orioles’ history.
1982 — Milwaukee Brewers reliever Rollie Fingers becomes the first player in major-league history to record 300 career saves as Milwaukee defeats the Seattle Mariners, 3-2.
1985 — Mary Decker Slaney runs the mile in a world-record 4:16.71. 1987 — Mack Lobell sets harness racing’s trotting mile (1:52).
