Climate measures are urgent

-

RE: HOTHOUSE EARTH (AUG. 14)

This article is not intended to be alarmist but to inform. Much of what it states is already in evidence, from record heat to devastating storms and floods, from drought to Artic ice melt.

What this article makes clear is that we are approaching a tipping point. We have had basic information for several decades, we cannot simply continue business as usual. But stronger more decisive action is required. What steps can we take? This is no time to dither over small steps like cap-and-trade. Tear this up without something constructive to take its place? We need credible leadership. Beyond lament and pointing to the dire results of climate change we need to set out real and practical steps that can be discussed in public forums.

We may sense the need to do something but we are tempted to think there is little we can do. If we recognize a need for decisive steps, it is clear, we cannot simply wait on the big “conferences” or political leaders. Certainly we can speak up to support the small steps that some have been prepared to take. But more than that we need to take steps locally where we are: better use of public transportation and thoughtful consumption of food (using local products avoids extensive pollution in transport). Those are a beginning. It is urgent: we need more awareness and to take real steps.
