It defies all good sense that the government of Ontario intends to go to the extreme of suspending parts of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms for something as trivial as downsizing one municipal council.

And it is no small irony that, in affirming its constituti­onal right to oversee municipali­ties, the Ford government is ready to suspend parts of that same constituti­on.

Ontario’s best hope is that clearer heads will prevail. Thomas Mulligan, Grimsby
