The vehicle involved in a head-on crash Saturday, which left a mother and her two small children in the oncoming car seriously injured, had been reported stolen just hours before the horrific collision.

Hamilton police were called to Nebo Road, near Dickenson Road shortly after 3:30 p.m. after the stolen vehicle tried to pass another car, but struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

The other vehicle, which was southbound, was being driven by a 29-year-old woman, with her two-year-old and three-week-old in the back. All were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The newborn remains in critical condition and the mother and toddler are in serious, but stable condition.

The stolen vehicle was being driven by a 17-year-old Hamiltonarea male. An 18-year-old male passenger was also seriously injured. They also remain in hospital in serious, but stable condition.

The vehicle had been reported stolen in Hamilton at 6 a.m. that morning, said Const. Jerome Stewart.

Detectives have not ruled out any possible factors in the crash, including whether impairment was a factor, he said. Police are awaiting more information.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with four counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
